2022 - Active
Boohoo, a prominent online fashion conglomerate, encountered the dual challenge of establishing a unified returns interface across its diverse portfolio of brands and finding highly skilled, cost-effective talent to execute this mission.
A series of intricate challenges were faced by Boohoo, a prominent online fashion conglomerate.
Talent Recruitment and Integration
Boohoo aimed to recruit high-skilled, cost-effective talent to construct a unified returns interface for their brands. The recent acquisition of PLT presented the challenge of integrating their return operations into a unified platform.
Expensive and Inflexible Returns System
Boohoo encountered operational challenges due to the presence of an expensive and inflexible global returns system, which had adverse effects on both efficiency and flexibility within the organization
To overcome the challenges, a SaaS platform was developed using AWS serverless architecture. The key components of the solution included:
AWS Serverless Architecture
The platform was built using AWS Lambda, RDS, SQS, and SNS, taking advantage of the serverless architecture to ensure scalability, cost-efficiency, and flexibility.
Integration at Order and SKU Levels
The platform unified Boohoo at order and SKU levels, maintaining real-time warehouse stock counts via Warehouse Management System (WMS) integration
Customization and In-House System
The platform was tailored to Boohoo’s unique needs, creating an in-house global returns system. It integrated warehouse, shipping, payments, and brand inventory.
Skilled Team Leadership
The solution was designed and developed by a skilled team led by a PhD, ensuring expertise and efficient execution of the project.
The implementation of the unified returns interface using AWS serverless architecture had several significant impacts:
Operational Efficiency and Cost Savings
Transitioning to the AWS platform via a SaaS model eliminated upfront IT infrastructure costs, improving operational efficiency and reducing expenses. The serverless architecture provided scalability and cost-efficiency, boosting overall performance.
The unified returns interface eliminated the dependency on the legacy system, offering enhanced flexibility for future business needs. This increased revenue by streamlining returns management and saving significant time for Boohoo.
Scalability and Expansion
The efficient Global Returns Interface, initially deployed for one brand, was later expanded to include all Boohoo Group brands. This expansion simplified returns management across the conglomerate, leveraging the benefits of the unified platform and reducing complexities.
Simplified Integration and Workflow
The platform’s integration with the warehouse, shipping companies, payment gateways, and brand inventory facilitated a seamless returns process, optimizing workflow and improving overall customer experience.
